Collaboration across government is made so much easier with GovWifi. It’s a wifi authentication service that allows civil servants and visitors to use a secure, single username and password to connect to guest wifi across the public sector.

GovWifi is used by more than 850,000 people across the UK, including civil servants, guests and visitors and it’s free to use. Individuals who want to sign up to use GovWifi when they’re in any public sector building can follow the instructions here.

If you want to connect your organisation to GovWifi, click on the green box on the right for all the information you need. The Cabinet Office operates the service and covers the cost of running it to make it simpler for government departments and other public sector organisations to work together efficiently.

Benefits of GovWifi

  • A one-off, single sign on –  you don’t have to sign up for and remember different usernames and passwords for wifi networks in every UK public sector building they visit.
  • People can sign up themselves by sending a text or email, reducing admin. Find out how to connect to GovWifi here.
  • It’s available to all civil servants, guests and visitors.
  • All UK public sector organisations can offer GovWifi. This means any organisation fully controlled or funded by the UK government, including central government departments, local government, emergency services, NHS trusts, courts, UK embassies and consulates.
  • For UK public sector organisations it’s more secure than using a single password, or ‘pre-shared key’ for your guest wifi network.
  • It can be set up over existing infrastructure, so it’s quick to install.
  • It’s free for all users. UK public sector organisations will need to cover the installation and ongoing operating and support costs of the network they’re using for GovWifi.

What the service does not include

The GovWifi team does not provide:

  • any hardware
  • onsite help with your network
  • support for GovWifi users in your building if they need help

Data protection

Information about data protection is set out in a memorandum of understanding that you’ll need to agree to during the onboarding process. You can sign it from within the GovWifi admin account.
