How the Government Property Agency is defining ‘place’ across the UK
Defining ‘place’ and why it matters for the UK
In the property industry, the word ‘place’ is everywhere. But what does it actually mean in practice? At the Government Property Agency (GPA), we view ‘place’ as more than just a geographic location, it’s a welcoming home, a modern workplace, solid infrastructure, shops, schools, hospitals – the things that make up a good quality of life.
As the largest property holder in government, we are creating the foundation for ‘place’ by delivering modern, efficient workplaces with interoperable technology and high quality workplace services, where people can collaborate, improve productivity and build a community. The potential for social and economic impact is huge.
Regenerating communities
The Government Hubs Programme is central to this mission, a project that is transforming unused land into a catalyst for new jobs and regional prosperity. By regenerating ‘brownfield’ sites, often derelict industrial areas, we are breathing new life into local economies.
The recent breaking ground ceremony for the Brunswick Street hub at the Darlington Economic Campus highlights a prime example of this. Our work continues with the Plan for London, and the refurbishment of heritage spaces in Whitehall. As we look to the future, the opportunities to drive further growth are significant.
Shining a light on our impact
To share our progress and collaborate with the wider industry, we are proud to be participating in the UK’s Real Estate & Investment Infrastructure Forum – more commonly known as UKREiiF – this May. This event brings together investors, developers, and senior decision-makers from across the UK property sector.
Hosting the UK Government Campus in partnership with the Office of Government Property (OGP) again, and alongside partners such as the Ministry for Housing, Communities & Local Government (MHCLG), the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) and Homes England, we will be showcasing how government property can act as a springboard for national and international investment.
